“They took palm branches and went out to meet him, shouting, ‘Hosanna!’ ‘Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!’ ‘Blessed is the king of Israel!'”
– John 12:13 (NIV)
Palm Sunday marks the beginning of Holy Week, a powerful moment in the life of Jesus when He entered Jerusalem, not as a warrior on a horse, but as a humble King on a donkey. The people welcomed Him with shouts of “Hosanna!”, waving palm branches, and celebrating Him as their Savior. But what’s striking is that many of these same voices would later cry out, “Crucify Him!” just days later.
This moment challenges us to reflect on what kind of king we’re looking for. Are we only excited about Jesus when things are going well, when He answers our prayers the way we want? Or do we still worship Him when life is difficult, when He leads us down a path of humility, service, or sacrifice? Jesus didn’t come to meet people’s expectations, He came to fulfill God’s mission. And sometimes, that means His way won’t always look like what we hoped for. But it’s always good. Always full of purpose. Always marked by love.
As we enter Holy Week, take time to consider who Jesus is to you. Is He just someone you turn to when you need help? Or is He truly King over your heart, your choices, and your life? Worship Him not just for what He can do but for who He is.
