A Tribute to those we lost…
We remember all the loved ones we have lost this past year. Their passing, COVID-19 related or not, have left a vacuum in our hearts. Nonetheless, we are encouraged by the promise of reuniting with them again before the throne of Jesus. May the souls of our beloved rest in the perfect peace of Christ.

A Word from the Director

Dear parents, families, friends, and all you people of goodwill gathered here tonight, I want to sincerely thank you for carving out this time and for choosing to spend it with us.
As we continue to navigate what has become an unprecedented and challenging year, we are faced with unfolding, unpredictable, and challenging realities. These realities have been different for different people. Some of us have seen our world capsize on us. Many families have suffered very tragic losses and as if that in itself is not worse enough, families did not even have the opportunity to say goodbye to their loved ones. Many lives were upended by job losses and we were all robbed the wrong way by this pandemic, one way or another. Politically, instability and unrest heightened the dissonance between brothers, friends, and opposing ideological sides.
However, to be heavily focused on all these troubles will cause us to sink deeper and deeper into despair and fear. Now, we must look up to Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith. Now, more than ever, we must heed the words of Numbers 7:14 which says:
If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land.
Prayer is our first and most important recourse. Prayer is the most powerful tool we have in our arsenal. By strength shall no man prevail (1 Samuel 2:9) but by prayer, we are able to change things, even the most difficult situations will bow to the power of God because by the power of the Holy spirit we are able to bring about a lasting, sustainable, and effective change, emanating from the realm of the spirit.
While I encourage you to sit back and enjoy the music, the product of each student’s hard work and perseverance, please be in a praying mood. Be introspective. Throughout the evening, reflect and meditate on the power of God and what you want to see Him do today in your life, in the nation, and the world at large.
Whether it be the instrumental renditions of the combined orchestra, the sonorous and evocative texts sung by Rendered, or the swinging classic arrangements performed by the jazz band, let this performance be a reminder of how God does the impossible in our lives. Most of these songs were learned over zoom and the laws of physics do not support group music making over the internet. This feat would not have been possible without the enthusiasm and relentless efforts of each student performing tonight. Please be sure to commend their commitment and thank them in the course of the night.
Dear parents, in spite of your fears for the safety of your children, you trusted us and supported them to make music through it all. THANK YOU SO MUCH! A special thank you to Mrs. Calfin, who helped coordinate with parents in the absence of a band parents council this year.
Jeremy Hoff, our head of school, proves that we can achieve anything we want as long as we show empathy and a willingness to try. Thank you for your magnanimity, flexibility, and grace through the various changes we had to make before arriving at an in-person concert. I wish to thank you for movements in the pipeline that would make our classes easily accessible to students. Mr. Frendt and his administrative team have shown support to us and readily adjusted and accommodated us in such an unprecedented time. Thank you!
The department of performing arts is blessed with teachers who are passionate about their craft. As overworked as we may be, we put in our best every day to help our students in their mental and spiritual growth. We may come upon rocky days but we are always poised to support each other. Therefore, I’d like to thank Karen Lee, the department chair, Cooky Hurst, the indefatigable assistant of the department, and Whitney Shumaker, the drama teacher. I will not forget the strong foundations that Mike Metzler continues to give our students up in the north campus. Thank you all so much. Our office staff are the best. We love and appreciate you Laurie Hand, Shawn Bristol, Nikki Henderson, and Leslie Petit.
I want to honor and appreciate all the teachers who readily gave permission to and allowed band students to leave their classes when we needed extra rehearsals. You are amazing and we thank you.
Many thanks to J.C. and our facilities staff, they have been amazing and we’re grateful to them for their labor of love.
Lastly, I would like to thank all the Band Student Councils for their leadership in helping to run our ensembles. Each year we hold a leadership workshop where we hear and demonstrate the tenets of servant leadership and what it means to lead like Jesus. It is remarkable and exhilarating to see firsthand how these students put into practice all they have learned with or without a council position.
Thanks, everyone, for showing up today. May we all experience a miraculous answer to the prayers we raise tonight and I pray that the Lord meets us all at the point of our needs. Amen!
Thank you, and have a wonderful summer!
