Hurry Up Tomorrow: The Weeknd’s Final Album

by | Jan. 31, 2025

Hurry Up Tomorrow, The Weeknd’s final album, was finally released on January 31, 2025 after a long wait. This marks the end to Abel Makkonen Tesfaye’s moniker, The Weeknd. The album, Hurry Up Tomorrow, is the final part of The Weeknd’s trilogy, following After Hours (2020) and Dawn FM (2022). Despite being the end of an era for The Weeknd, the album delivers one of his most ambitious and immersive projects yet. The album was announced on September 4, 2024 and was originally scheduled to be released on January 24, 2025, but due to the recent Los Angeles fires, The Weeknd postponed the release until January 31.

A Farewell Worth the Hype

From the moment the album begins, it’s clear that Hurry Up Tomorrow is something special. The album is not just another album, it’s a whole experience, and The Weeknd knows how to make an exit. It blends The Weeknd’s signature moody, melancholic vibe, but also adds an electrifying EDM-inspired soundscape with an existential-esque feeling. The album provides a vibe different from the Weeknd’s previous albums. As always, The Weeknd’s voice remains the centerpiece of each track, taking listeners through a journey of heartache and existentialism. Thematically, it explores finality, regret, and transcendence, all wrapped up in hypnotic beats. It gives a feeling of depth that can’t simply be explained through words.

Every track pulses with an urgency that mirrors the title of the album, as if The Weeknd is racing towards something. There’s a unique intensity to every song, each one feeling like a different part of a puzzle that slowly builds up to the end of the album. With this final project, The Weeknd has crafted a world where listeners can lose themselves in the music, either dancing, crying, or reflecting.

Standout Tracks

Fans say that the majority of the album did not let down, but some specific songs stood out more than others. Wake Me Up delivered an emotional feeling of the end of an era in the first half of the song, but also gave an upbeat 90’s vibe towards the second half. The haunting melody, which shares similar themes to Brian De Palma’s Scarface and Michael Jackson’s Thriller, made it an instant classic in The Weeknd’s career.

Open Hearts delved into themes of vulnerability and the difficulties of love, showcasing The Weeknd’s signature blend of R&B and electronic elements. The Song has been well received by fans, especially within The Weeknd’s communities on Reddit. Many fans praised the song’s emotional depth and production quality, but also the transition into the song from the previous one, Baptized In Fear.

São Paulo (feat. Anitta) injected an intoxicated, club energy into the album. The song was released on October 31, 2024, but was edited in the album release, making it a perfect balance between The Weeknd’s signature melancholic themes and Anitta’s baile funk.

Legacy and Impact

With this album, The Weeknd cements his legacy not just as a pop or R&B icon, but as an artist who has consistently pushed thematic boundaries. From being the first artist to have 18 songs with over one billion streams, to one of the most influential artists of all time, The Weeknd has truly left his mark on the music industry forever.

Not only does The Weeknd plan on releasing Hurry Up Tomorrow as his final album, a movie about the album is releasing along side it as well. Hurry Up Tomorrow is an upcoming American psychological thriller that will release in theater’s May 16, 2025. The movie will be based on the story of the album, and will star Abel Makkonen Tesfaye alongside actor’s Jenna Ortega and Barry Keoghan.

Whether this truly marks the end of The Weeknd as we know him or simply the beginning of a new chapter, one thing is certain: Hurry Up Tomorrow is an unforgettable farewell.
