Heritage Christian students place 4th in Musical Category

Heritage Christian ranks top 1% of Southern California schools at DTASC

As the air gets cooler, the fall competition season starts to take place and the Performing Arts students of Heritage Christian have performed in the prestigious competition, DTASC, placing in the top 1 percentile. DTASC, standing for the Drama Teachers Association of Southern California, invites hundreds of students spanning from schools all across Southern California to compete in a brutal competition to find the best of the best.

The students at Heritage Christian, middle school and high school alike, have and will be attending this incredible competition to share their talents and grow in community with each other. With the high school competition finished, the middle school students at Heritage are pumped to perform on Nov. 9, 2024.

The competition itself has many categories to choose from, ranging from monologues, small groups, female-centric, large groups, etc. This being Heritage Christian’s third year of attending DTASC, the Performing Arts students participated in multiple categories, including Open Musical.

This year, our Open Musical group did exceptionally well, placing 4th out of 28 entries! Open Musical rules state that the 8 minute performance must be completely acapella, using only 4 chairs and 10 people to create an incredible story. One of our students, Sophie Hoff, who was a part of the DTASC Musical group states, “I love the acapella aspect of doing the musical category in DTASC because it gives me the opportunity to use my percussion skills!”

In addition, the DTASC rules state that all schools must be anonymous while performing, meaning you should not tell anyone which school you are from until after the competition, and there are no costumes, which gives a chance for low-funded departments who can’t afford these competitions to share their gifts. The Drama Teachers Association of Southern California’s mission is to “create a network where theatre educators and students can effectively communicate ideas, share resources, workshop and showcase their theatre skills.”

With this incredible win, the Performing Arts students at Heritage Christian hope to attend the Shakespeare DTASC festival, held in the Spring of 2025 and keep the winning streak alive. Check out Heritage Christian’s Instagram to see pictures from the competition and more!
